Basin Street Blues (Spencer Williams) is the 1928 iconic pop song romanticising life on the main street of the Storyville district near where the turn basin of the Carondolet Canal was once located. Singer, songwriter and pianist Williams was born in New Orleans, worked in Chicago and New York and toured Europe with various bands, writing for Josephine Baker in Paris at the Folies Bergère. Older recordings of the song welcome the visitor saying, “Basin Street is the street where all the dark and light folks meet”. That line is dropped here and in most later recordings, but the definitive mention of New Orleans as “The Land of Dreams” remains.
