about

Ç’est l’autre Cancan (Edward ‘Kid’ Ory) Also called Créole Song, L’autre Cancan was recorded by Kid Ory in 1944 and was the first issue on Crescent Records by Nesuhi Ertegun. The French-speaking Ory, known for his ‘tailgate trombone’ style was born on Woodland Plantation near LaPlace Louisiana in 1886 where he began as a banjo player. The band with a mix of Louisiana and Los Angeles players included Mutt Carey, trumpet; Omer Simeon, clarinet; Buster Wilson, piano; Bud Scott guitar; Ed Garland bass; and Alton Redd, drums. The jaunty lyrics are a humorous retort to Madame Pedot and one other gossip (cancan) - or paramour (?) - known for salacious tales. Jelly Roll Morton, who also sang the song, said the cancan reference was vulgar. Ory, perhaps more than any bandleader, carried the French Créole side of New Orleans jazz to a national audience while living in Los Angeles and Chicago. He played over the years with King Oliver, Ma Rainey, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Bessie Smith and Johnny Dodds.
