Les Oignons (traditional) Don learned this from Albert Nicholas’ beloved version with Danny Barker on the CD Jazz á la Créole, but the tune is associated with Sidney Bechet. The song is of a female customer’s encounter with a French Market vendor selling onions at a good price. A double-entendre in the negotiation for chickens brings new meaning as does the reference to “hot rice cakes” in venerable Créole bawdy humour.
