Red Wing (Kerry Mills/traditional) is a beloved, standard Anglo-American fiddle tune. Originally a 1907 song with words by Thurland Chattaway about a sad ‘Indian maid’ who lost her loved ‘brave’ in battle, Red Wing was later made into Union Maid by Woody Guthrie. Don - who has played bluegrass country at times - learned it in a different way, saying, “Red Wing was the melody played by the ice cream truck when I was a kid. Actually, it was called Red Wing Ice Cream. I didn’t recognise this or realise it until I began playing the song with Willie Humphrey and others”.
